You see him at the liquor store. You see him at the bus stop, trying to look at you without being seen. Who is he? He is a person. In this debut novel, a person walks around Chicago contemplating the possibility of starving to death on purpose. He has sex with his neighbor. He goes out to look for a job but just buys little plastic dogs from homeless people instead. Who is the person? The person is you. The person is me. The person is sitting in his room shooting an empty pellet gun at his face, feeling the slow exhaustion of a Co2 cartridge. The person sits in a bathtub reading his roommate's yearbook. He wants to create a contract mandating worldwide friendship. Person invents new and splendid ways of not getting along. You will read this book and remember why you mainly read books that have sex in them. You will become . . . a person.
During a 7 day, 450 mile bicycle tour along the northern west coast of Michigan (Shoreline Tours) that my wife and I participated in, we encountered a terrible situation. First, a little background:
Until this year, my wife Cathy had never gone on a bicycle tour, or even ridden her bike more than 30 miles. I haven't done more than a 2 day tour in 25 years, and was not in the greatest shape of my life. So this year, she signed us up for a 7 day, 450 mile bicycle tour along the northern west coast of Michigan (Shoreline Tours). We tried training properly for it, but couldn't seem to find enough time to ride as often as we needed to. We went anyway.
Camping each evening and riding every day, we participated in a bicycle tour of beautiful shorelines and countryside. We had a fantastic time (in spite of the pain)!
On the last day, we were really starting to feel the exhaustion and feeling pain in many places. About 15 miles from the end of the tour, far out in the countryside, we were really exhausted and counting each mile to the end. Then we came upon a group of other bikers from the tour gathered around a prone figure in the street. Someone was giving CPR (and had been for about 5 minutes).
Cathy is an RN Nurse, and has been working in an Emergency Room in the Detroit area for the last 6 months, so she has plenty of experience with medical emergencies. When Cathy and I arrived, the victim was turning purple, not breathing, and his heart had stopped. She took over giving CPR (the other person, although trained, had never actually done it to a real person before) and Cathy gave instructions to others to assist. Everyone did everything possible until the ambulence arrived nearly 15 minutes later. Within a couple of minutes of Cathy giving CPR, the victim's color returned nearly to normal, in spite of not being able to get air into his lungs.
The victim was 68 years old, was severely diabetic, and had been riding a tandem in the tour with his wife when he went into insulin shock. Without going into full details, his airway became obstructed before anyone got to him and couldn't be cleared (even using Heimlick) until the ambulence crew ventilated and used suction (sorry, my terminology is probably not quite correct).
By the time the ambulence arrived, Cathy had been giving CPR for nearly 15 minutes. When they loaded the victim into the ambulence, Cathy came over to me and nearly collapsed in my arms. But then, the ambulence crew asked for her assistance and she went into the ambulence to help them try to stabilize the victim. They worked on him for about 20 minutes then drove off to the hospital, leaving me with our two bikes wondering what I should do. Fortunately, a SAG vehicle (vans with bike racks, tools and other things to help stranded bikers on the tour) collected our bikes and myself and took me to the end point of the tour. All I could think about was that the victim hadn't had air for at least 20 minutes, and how terribly tired my Cathy must be.
2 hours later, the ambulence brought Cathy to my location at the end point of the tour. Thus ended our vacation. Unfortunately, the victim never made it. I can't help thinking that if we had arrived sooner, she might have been able to save his life.
Footnote: I later spoke with a friend of the couple (victim and wife), who told me that just the day before he had told her about a heart attack he had last year; and that when he dies, he said, he hopes it's doing something he loves such as bicycling.

The Person provides psychologists with an organizational scheme for personality psychology. This sets the study of the person into evolutionary and cultural context and divided personality up into three broad areas: dispositional traits, characteristic adaptations, and integrative life stories. The fifth edition has been updated to reflect advances that have occurred in the field of psychology in the past few years. It presents new findings that have been obtained with respect to the correlates of personality traits, the dynamics of motives and goals in human lives, and the meanings and manifestations of life stories. Discussions are included on the new ideas on evolution and morality as well as the role of culture in personality. Psychologists will also find a much stronger and detailed discussion of psychophysiology of extraversion, neuroticism, and the train of sensation-seeking.
